How Not to Talk About Muslim Feminism
Feminism is a loaded word. Is this an appropriate word to use when talking about Muslim women’s empowerment? In this lecture, Professor Asifa Quraishi-Landes will explain why feminism is so often associated with the West, why this is a problem, and also what this all has to do with Muslim women – especially those working for women’s rights from an Islamic perspective.
The lecture will also give particular attention to the way Shari’a is used – and misused – by many players in this project of women’s rights, and why it is important to understand what women’s rights advocacy looks like from a Shari’a-minded perspective.
