Seminar: Abu Zayd Al-Balkhi: The ‘Pioneer of Psychotherapy’
The foundations of what might be called Islamic psychology were first laid by polymaths such as Abu Zayd Al-Balkhi, who coined terms such as “Al-Tibb Al-Ruhani” to describe spiritual and psychological health. Al-Balkhi was the first to differentiate between neurosis and psychosis, and is considered by some to have pioneered psychotherapy and psychosomatic medicine. He was also an advocate of music therapy.
